Fee Waivers

General Aims Of The Policy

The BGDA exists to break down the barriers that females face in debating. In promoting equality amongst debaters, we wish to also ensure that socioeconomic status does not leave any student behind. As such, the BGDA has a subsidisation policy which aims to enable students and schools of all backgrounds to participate in the competition.

Levels Of Subsidisation Offered

The policy was designed with flexibility in order to accommodate any possible situation. Schools may seek whole or partial subsidisation for one or more teams. However, given that their is a limited pool of funds for subsidising teams, the BGDA after allocating a single, whole team subsidy for a school will preference offering a variety of schools subsides as opposed to multiple subsidies for a single school.

Criteria For Allocating Waivers

The exact procedure that the executive will utilise in determining whether a fee will be waived is stated in Rule 22 of the Competition Rules. It should be noted that these rules may be changed at any time by the executive at their discretion. A simplified explanation of the procedure is listed below.

In order to qualify for a fee waiver, an applying school must satisfy the following criteria:
- The school and its students would benefit from participation in the competition; and
- The school  would have significant difficulty in allocating funds to register a team or teams or would directly charge students who are of low socioeconomic status for the registration fee.

Application For Fee Waivers

In order to apply for a fee waiver, the head of debating at a school must apply on the behalf of the school and its students before Friday the 18th of February. Should you wish to apply for a fee waiver please contact our Schools' Officer at schools@bgda.org.au.
