Monday Programs 2021
Monday CompetitionOur primary competition is open to all female-identifying students in grades 9-12, including students who attend co-educational schools. The competition is held across five weeks in terms 1 and 2, culminating in a Grand Final and Awards Ceremony where the Champion Team and Best Speaker for every year level will be announced.
In 2021 students will compete in the following divisions:
Before every round a free afternoon tea gives students an opportunity to refuel and socialise with students from other schools. Following this, all students are invited to attend a Foundational, Intermediate, or Advanced training session to enhance their debating skills and ask some of the most accomplished coaches in Queensland any questions they may have about debating. All debates are conducted in short-preparation format, maximizing the opportunity for skill building and independent thought. As our competition is small, we only use highly trained and experienced adjudicators who deliver valuable feedback in an extended workshop setting. Monday Junior ProgramIn response to significant interest from younger students, in 2021 we are offering girls in grades 7-8 the opportunity to get involved with the BGDA for the first time. The Junior Monday Program will run in parallel with our Monday Competition, with 5 rounds held across terms 1 and 2. In round 1 students will benefit from an extended short preparation workshop, which will equip them with the skills and confidence to participate in later rounds. In rounds 2 to 5, students will take part in a brief training session and then prepare for their short preparation debate with the support of BGDA adjudicators. This will help build their skill base across the competition so they are appropriately supported and challenged. The Junior Monday Competition will not feature a final series, instead focusing on development by offering students extended training sessions, guided preparation, and workshop style adjudications. We are mindful that due to the disruptions experienced last year relating to COVID-19 that many students will be new to debating and we have tailored this program accordingly.
