Case Competition 2021

What is the Case Competition?

One of the most challenging aspects of debating is developing a thorough, persuasive, and coherent team case- something that the BGDA normally challenges participants to do within one hour of short preparation time. While the BGDA is on a temporary hiatus from in-person activities due to COVID-19, our new Case Competition will provide students with the opportunity to practice this important debating skill from their own homes.  Competitors will prepare a written debating-style case in support of their chosen side of the stipulated preliminary round topic. It is anticipated that the process of researching, brainstorming, drafting, and finalising submissions will take approximately 5-10 hours.

The Case Competition is open to all female students from grades 9-12. While previous debating experience will assist participants in preparing their submissions, any student who is considering trying out debating in the future or who enjoys research and writing tasks is welcome to enter. Involvement in this program will be supported through an online interactive case-preparation workshop, as well as other training resources which will be released throughout the duration of the competition. All students will also be able to access feedback on their submissions, making  this a valuable learning opportunity for all involved regardless of their skill level or experience.

The competition consists of two categories: Junior (grade 9-10) and Senior (grade 11-12),  with a maximum of 1000 words for Junior and 1200 words for Senior. Students may compete individually or in a pair, provided that they enter into the category the older member of the pair is eligible for (e.g. a grade 10 and grade 11 student could enter as a pair into the Senior category). The competition will culminate in a Grand Final, at which winners of each category will be awarded exciting prizes.
